St Gregory Dress Code Guidelines

In September 2011, a mandatory dress code was implemented in all Toronto Catholic District School Board elementary schools. There are many advantages to this new dress code that include the enhanced safety of our students, the promotion of the school’s identity and the strengthened sense of community within our school. Moving to a board-wide dress code will unify the elementary schools and provide a degree of consistency with our secondary schools.

The dress code (referred to as “Appropriate Dress Code”) consists of any combination of white and navy blue garments (plain white top, navy blue bottom or, plain navy blue top and bottom, no denim). There is a great deal of choice and flexibility available to parents and students with this type of dress code. You will be able to purchase a variety of clothing styles at retailers of your choice. Some dress code options have been presented to our parent council by local clothing distributors. The attached list of suggested suppliers will carry a range of white and navy clothing, both plain and those with the St. Gregory Catholic School crest.

Please review our Uniform Infraction Policy.

In consultation with our school’s parent council, the St. Gregory Catholic School’s Navy Blue and White Dress Code will have the following requirements and restrictions:

1) At all times clothing must be neat, modest, and suitable for a Catholic school environment;

2) Tops that do not have the St. Gregory Catholic School Crest must be plain and with no graphics, messages or slogans;

3) Shirts must have two sleeves;

4) Not permitted- clothing that is revealing, including, but not limited to, halter tops, tube tops, tank tops, low cut tops, and midriff baring or suggestive attire;

5) Hats, caps, bandanas, sweatbands and other head attire may not be worn in school or in the classrooms and must be removed upon entry into the school;

6) During the winter months, your child will need shoes for indoor use only. The wearing of socks or boots is neither safe nor healthy. In the event of an evacuation there will not be time to put on shoes nor is it safe to travel through the building or on the stairs in socks;

7) Footwear restrictions: no flip-flops. Other footwear should be selected based on practicality and safet;

8) Gym attire will also be navy blue and white and each classroom teacher will outline his/her requirements; and

9) Proper footwear (gym shoes) is the minimum requirement in the gymnasium.

The school is a workplace and the children are to dress accordingly. Students who fail to comply with the school's appropriate dress code will be disciplined. This may include the provision of suitable attire by the school for that day, a note written in the agenda, or a phone call to the parent/guardian. Thank you for your cooperation and support as we move forward with this exciting initiative.
